There are a wide variety of spirits. Spirits seem to be unique among monsters (beings with a racial class instead of class slots) in that they can eventually grow old and wise and then somehow transform in to Dark Ones, who have class slots instead of a racial class. Spirits have a wide variety of physical forms or hosts. If a Spirits physical form is killed the Spirit won't truly die and can heal its body to use again. The only way to truly kill a Spirit is to destroy the part of them that survives the physical forms death but this is extremely difficult to do as it is hard to even perceive their incorporeal self
Most spirits are hostile and show no signs of sentience, but some, probably those closer to becoming Dark Ones, can be talkative and/or friendly. Spirits often have type names of the form "Spirit of X", where X is replaced with various words/concepts. Known types of spirits include:
- Death Spirits - use mind attacks
- Spirits of Winter (Lvls 312, 327, 330, 341)- They apparently appear around the start of spring, bringing back unseasonable cold wherever they reside, but disappear eventually. Effectively a living seasonal anomaly. It's considered not worth the effort of killing them unless they happen to take up a territory that includes human population, or an important road or resource. They attack any source of warmth in their area, and may have thermoception as their primary sense. Their lowest known levels are around 150.
- Spirit of Blood
- Spirit of Death - lvl 232-782 - armored black worm with a diameter of at least 10 meters chapter, scorpion like creatures, mantises, ants, even squid like beings, 524-525
- Astral Spirit (lvl 821) It’s body looked pale blue and smooth, more humanoid than nearly all the other creatures. Six limbs without hands extended from its back as it floated in the air, chapter 524, 542
- Daughters of Sephilon
The only Spirit type we have heard much information about is Spirits of Winter.
