[Necaloph – lvl 609]

Leave or become nourishment,” it whispered, as if it was a choice between whole and low fat milk at the grocery store.

Ilea walked through the darkness until she found a small crevice in the cavern wall. Within she perceived what looked like a beating heart.

Location[]

This dangerous creature once owned the Shining Caves under The Pit.

Abilities[]

It is one of the very few immobile monsters, a domain monster.

It has a very weak physique.

Intelligent but has a strange monster logic.(Every time it failed to control Ilea, it attacked harder instead of calmly talking, it seems in its mind there was not even an option not to control the creatures that entered its domain.)

Has advanced mind magic.

It has both very hidden/subtle magic and very strong magic that even destroys Ilea's defense (at that time, Mental Resistance - 3rd lvl 18).

Can control creatures without damaging their minds to the level that it can tell them who to attack and what to look at.

It has a very large radius of more than a kilometer.

It also hides its presence and to find the source you need to get pretty close.

If the controlled creatures leave the radius, the connection goes out and they are freed from control.

It has controlled victims for centuries.

Some descriptions from chapters

They were still over a kilometer away.

“Shining caves,” Pierce said. “Why stop here?”

“I can feel mind magic ahead. It’s subtle but there’s no monster close by, which means it’s quite the range,” Ilea explained.

She couldn’t feel an instant push nor was there overwhelming power. No, the magic here was way more subtle. Beyond even what Eve could do. Might actually be close to what the Enavurin showed me back in the Descent.

“A being capable of telepathy…,” came the answer, almost like a whisper. The words were spoken in Elos Standard but Ilea could tell the pronunciation wasn’t exactly right.

“You have entered my domain. And those who enter, are susceptible to my presence,” the being said in a calm tone, as if it was explaining the circumstances to a child.

“Yes, but rarely ones receptive to the mind. If you truly are such a being, then there is nothing here for you. Leave or become nourishment,” it whispered, as if it was a choice between whole and low fat milk at the grocery store.

“It’s clearly intelligent,” Verena said. “I’ve not heard of a stationary mind magic creature like that however. Do you know how far away it is? How large is its domain?”

“It’s pretty extensive. The range isn’t exactly on the Enavurin’s level but it’s impressive. I’d have to get closer to find the source even, which is something that hasn’t ever happened before,” she said.

“Oh… wow, that’s some advanced level mind magic.

It’s so fucking subtle it might just manage to get into their heads if they stay long enough.

Verena looked around, her eyes burning with a bright flame. “They’re directly controlled,” she said.

“What do you mean?” Ilea asked. She could see a few of the creatures in her dominion.

“Look at their minds. They’re not damaged,” Verena replied through telepathy.

Ilea checked them with her healing and came to the same conclusion. The mind magic influence was obvious but it differed from the damage she had taken in her training sessions.

She could see the mind magic connection fade when the beings were bunched up in the tunnel, now out of the monster’s range.

She watched them look around in confusion, a few of them collapsing immediately, others rushing away in a panic. Some were about to attack the beings next to them.

Did the mind being sustain them somehow or did it make them eat and drink? Where did it get the food?

Ilea faced the rock worms now all turning towards her.

The creature didn’t communicate with her anymore, instead doubling down on its attempts to take over her mind. Now quite a bit more direct than before.

Pierce ground her teeth and followed her fellow Elder, their defenses cracking now that the creature wasn’t trying for subtlety anymore.

I’d consider leaving you alone even with everything you’ve already done.”

The reply was even more mind magic.

“I do not understand,” the creature whispered, now much closer.

Ilea walked through the darkness until she found a small crevice in the cavern wall. Within she perceived what looked like a beating heart.

“You should not be this dangerous,” the creature said.

Ilea didn’t feel like waiting any longer, her defenses struggling against the continuous stream of mental bombardment. She sacrificed a few thousand points of health and released Embered Heart into the Wyrm eye within her cannon. The spell manifested and lit up the darkness. Something quivered inside of the crevice before it stopped moving.

‘ding’ ‘You have defeated [Necaloph – lvl 609]’

For centuries has it enslaved our very minds,

Food and drink[]

Did the mind being sustain them somehow or did it make them eat and drink? Where did it get the food?

It is not known how it fed its victims, the source of the water is obvious, but the other is not clear.
Maybe somewhere in the variants of its control skills was the magical feeding of its victims.
Maybe it somehow ordered them to hunt near its domain.
Maybe it forced me to cut off pieces in order to use regeneration and healing magic later.
Maybe the people who came back out of their mind were actually its agents.
Or maybe the fluorescent plants was very nutritious.
What is certain is that we will never know.

Interesting trifles[]

  • The only known monster that has real mind control magic.
  • Much more dangerous than its level, it seems to confirm Fae's statement about the meaning of the level.
